Extendar: The Cyborg Warrior from Masters of the Universe

Masters of the Universe is a franchise that has captivated audiences for over three decades with its epic tales of fantasy and adventure. Among its many characters, Extendar stands out as a unique and fascinating cyborg warrior. Introduced in 1986 as part of the popular toy line, Extendar was a member of the Heroic Warriors and had the ability to mechanically extend his limbs, waist, and neck to towering heights, making him invincible in battle.

At first glance, Extendar appears as an ordinary knight in silver armor with his face shielded by a visor. However, he has the power of extension, which makes him a formidable opponent in combat. In the Mattel mini-comic “The Warrior Machine,” Extendar is introduced as a friend of Prince Adam, an ordinary knight who yearns for special powers after witnessing the skills of the Horde warrior Dragstor. Hordak, the leader of the Evil Horde, grants Extendar’s wish and subjects him to scientific experiments that turn him into a cyborg warrior with the power of extension.

Although his toy was released after the cancellation of the accompanying cartoon series, Extendar features prominently in various comics and storybooks. In the UK comic series published by London Editions, Extendar’s backstory is given in an origin story shared with Dragstor entitled “My Friend No More.” The story tells of how Extendar and Dragstor began as young athletes named Doodon and Theydon, respectively, and were best friends. After Doodon falls into quicksand during an annual race, Theydon sacrifices his victory to save his friend. However, the two are then captured by the Evil Horde and taken to Hordak’s laboratory, where they are turned into cyborg warriors to serve him. Extendar is able to resist the brainwashing effects of the experiment and escapes from Hordak, vowing to fight on until Dragstor is freed from the curse.

Although Extendar’s origins involve the Evil Horde, he does not fight the Horde in most of his minicomic appearances. Instead, he is seen battling the Evil Warriors or the Snake Men. Interestingly, Extendar’s mechanical parts are creations of the Horde, but his neck features a peace symbol.

Despite his popularity among fans, Extendar did not make an appearance in the 200X revival of the franchise, as the toy line had been cancelled before he could be reintroduced. Nevertheless, Extendar remains a beloved and unique character in the Masters of the Universe universe, whose power of extension makes him an unforgettable cyborg warrior.
