Wun-Dar: The Mysterious Hero of Masters of the Universe

Wun-Dar is a character that has gone through a bit of a transformation over the years. Originally, the character was known as the “Wonder Bread He-Man” because of a mail-away promotion that was associated with the bread brand. Fans who sent in proofs of purchase from Wonder Bread would receive a special version of the He-Man action figure that had brown hair instead of the usual blonde. This version of the figure was a bit of a mystery, as there was no backstory or name associated with it.

In 2010, the character was released as an exclusive in the Masters of the Universe Classics line, and was given the name Wun-Dar. The character's backstory was fleshed out, and fans finally had some answers about who this mysterious hero was.

However, over time, fans began to speculate and create their own theories about the character. Some believed that the brown-haired He-Man was from an alternate dimension or a different time period. Others thought that he was a completely separate character altogether. It wasn’t until years later that the character was officially given a name and backstory.

In 2022, a new action figure of Wun-Dar was released under the MOTU Origins line, as a Mattel Creations Exclusive. On the back of the card is beautiful, full panel art, similar to what we got with other Exclusives like Kol-Darr, which was inspired by Frank Frazetta’s “Death Dealer” Collection.

Wun-Dar’s backstory goes back to ancient times, when he was one of the mighty heroes who defended Eternia. As a reward for his heroic deeds, he was granted a place in Preternia, the Eternian heaven, where he was allowed to spend eternity with other heroes of Eternia. It was during this time that he took part in the Wild Hunt, riding a bionically enhanced dinosaur. Although he was beaten to the prize, the capture of a purple panthor, by King Grayskull, he still ended up in the winner’s circle.

As we saw in Revelation, when Prince Adam and a group of warriors came to Preternia to reforge the two halves of the Sword of Power, Wun-Dar was present at Grayskull Tower to bid them goodbye. It was then that he decided to return to the land of the living with them, to continue fighting for the good of Eternia.

Wun-Dar’s character design is also unique compared to the other heroes of Masters of the Universe. His brown hair, black Zodac armor, fur loincloth and attitude, set him apart from the typical blonde-haired He-Man design. He also wields a different sword than He-Man, with a jagged blade that looks more primitive.

As the Masters of the Universe franchise continues to evolve and expand, it will be interesting to see if Wun-Dar will play a larger role in the future. Perhaps he will finally make another appearance in an animated series, comic or movie. We have seen him in action figure form in MOTU Classics, and MOTU Origins through a Mattel Creations Exclusive.
